Breastfeeding

"One important thing to remember about breastfeeding is not to be unreasonably hard on yourself. It is a beautiful thing to be able to nourish your baby without using formula, but this practice isn’t for everyone or everybody. In my case, I tried very hard to breastfeed.. My son latched on well from the start, but my body wouldn’t produce enough milk to nourish him. Even after taking supplements and drinking a gallon of water a day, my supply continued to decrease. It was more frustrating to me than it was to my baby. He was always very patient and would try to get something from me. Around 4 months, though, he tried for a couple of seconds and just looked at me. I knew it was over. I cried about it, but when I began to think about it, I knew that I had tried my best to breastfeed and it just didn’t happen for me long-term. Austin was perfectly content with his bottle and just cuddling up to my chest. It helped to talk with others, too. It made me feel better knowing that other people I know had issues too. As a mother, you tend to be very self-critical. It is important to remember that breastfeeding isn’t for everyone or every body."

"Breastfeeding - take it one step at a time and ask questions! Set small milestones and if problems come up- be sure to seek help early. Also for the Dads, learn about breastfeeding too, supporting and encouraging mom is a big deal!"
